The rebuilding of the Neues Museum involves the reinstatement and completion of the building in terms of structure and restoration. The building elements, the northwest wing and southeast bay, will be rebuilt closely following the original volumes and room sequences. Both interior courtyards will be roofed over with glass roofs. The south, east and transverse colonnades, which are currently in storage, will be re-mounted.

The existing building is a masonry construction. The existing ceilings are coffered ceilings, vaults and domes of different types, composed of bricks and hollow pots. Columns support the ceilings. In places bowstring girders freely span the whole width of the room.
Some intermediate floors are to be built within the existing building fabric. The important existing doors and windows are almost completely conserved and will be upgraded in accordance with fire protection and security requirements.

Large wall and ceiling slabs composed of reconstituted stone of a high finish quality and precision form the facing. The structural framework of the Ägyptischer Hof, the apse in the Griechischer Hof, the flooring and ceilings are likewise composed of reconstituted stone. Exceptions to the rule are the brick calotte of the apse in the Griechischer Hof (Level 3) and the new dome in the Südkuppelsaal.
The double-layer exterior and courtyard walls are composed of self-supporting brick masonry consisting of recycled bricks. The courtyard roof is also double-leaf.

The current requirements for a museum usage include air-conditioning in all exhibition areas as well as a multitude of electrical and security systems and components. The new-build elements will include the essential functions, accommodating the lifts, technical rooms, sub-distribution panels and the majority of vertical technical shafts.
